Introduction
Betty Broderick is an American woman who gunned down her ex-husband (Daniel Broderick) and his new wife.
Daniel was a well-known medical malpractice lawyer. Betty shot them after a bitter divorce and custody battle over their children.
The double murder became international news.
Biography
She was born on November 7, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, as Elisabeth Anne Bisceglia.
Her father was Italian American, while her mother was Irish American.
Broderick enjoyed a traditional upbringing thanks to her Roman Catholic parents.
Betty went to Maria Regina High School, in Hartsdale.
Later, she graduated with a degree in English from the College of Mount St. Vincent in New York.
Husband
Betty and Daniel Broderick married on April 12, 1969, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, New York.
They had four children together: Rhett, Daniel, Lee, and Kim.
Betty met Daniel during a football weekend at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, when she was 17. At the time, he was a medical student at Cornell.
Dan came from a strict Catholic family in Pittsburgh.
In 1973, they moved to La Jolla, California, after Dan received a job offer as a medical malpractice lawyer.
In 1983, Betty began to suspect that Daniel was having an affair with his assistant, Linda Kolkena — a former stewardess and paralegal from Salt Lake City.
In 1985, after 16 years of marriage, Daniel filed for divorce.
After he left, Betty:
- drove her car through his front door;
- made repeated death threats against Dan and Linda;
- left obscene messages on his answering machine;
- covered the interior walls of his house with black spray paint.
“I banged my car into his door the day that he sold the family home,” Betty told Oprah in 1992.
She had also violated several restraining orders. Note – Daniel got a temporary restraining order keeping his ex-wife 100 yards from his office, his car, and his house.
The divorce was finalized in 1986.
She received over $9,000 a month in spousal support. Later, a judge ordered Daniel to pay Betty $16,100 a month.
Dan won custody of the kids.
On November 5, 1989, Betty drove to Dan’s house, pulled out a revolver, and showered Daniel and Linda with bullets while they slept.
She entered the house by using keys that belonged to her daughter. Betty had bought the gun a month before her husband remarried.
“I shot Daniel T. Broderick III because I wanted to survive,” she wrote in her memoir – Telling on Myself. Betty continued: “To live, far more than I wanted him to die. In the heat of battle, I let rip.”
She left the home and turned herself to the police later that day.
In 1991, Broderick was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 years to life in prison. During the trials, she never denied firing the fatal shots.
“I’m not going to live another day like this,” she said at the trial. “I can’t wake up just being absolutely at his mercy.”
“He took my home, my kids, my money,” Betty told The New York Times in 1991.
Prosecution experts said she was a narcissist, while mental health experts for the defense said she was depressed.
In 1992, Broderick granted Oprah her first prison interview from the Central California Women’s Facility.
In 2010, her requests for parole were denied. “I have met all criteria for parole and my release date was 2010,” Broderick told People.
Board of Prison Terms Commissioner Robert Doyle said at the time: “Your heart is still bitter, and you are still angry.”
In 2017, Broderick was again denied parole.
Her son, Daniel, said his mother should remain in jail and that she was “hung up on justifying what she did.”
“She has no remorse and zero insight into the killings,” Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “She just basically said they drove me to do this.”
