A hiker who fell to his death this weekend in Oregon has been identified.

Gerardo Hernandez-Rodriguez, 41, was hiking on the Multnomah Falls trails beyond the Benson Bridge, near the first switchback when he stumbled and fell down an embankment, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses reported losing sight of Hernandez. Sheriff’s deputies joined a U.S. Forest Service Ranger in a search of the area.

Officials say because of the steep terrain, first responders called for a drone used by the Gresham Police Department, while firefighters from Corbett Fire prepared to rappel from the trail.

Another sheriff’s deputy searched the base of the cliff on the south side of the Historic Columbia River Highway. Off the road, directly below where the fall occurred, the deputy found Hernandez.

The initial report stated Hernandez fell approximately 100-150 feet, but after further investigation, it is estimated that the fall was nearly 200 feet. Officials say that alcohol impairment was likely a contributing factor in the fall.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said that Hernandez was a father of five.

"Mom, Dad, five kids all here enjoying a beautiful day at Multnomah Falls, and unfortunately, a tragic accident happened," the spokesman said.
