Glen Campbell was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor. He released more than 60 albums including By the Time I Get to Phoenix (1967), Wichita Lineman (1968), and Rhinestone Cowboy (1975). He hosted the music/comedy show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969-72) on CBS. Glen Travis Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, in Billstown, Arkansas. He was 1 of 12 children. His father, Wesley, was a sharecropper, and his mother was Carrie Dell.

CAREER
Campbell got his first guitar at the age of 4. He was taught the basics by his uncle and within a few years, he began appearing on local radio stations. Campbell dropped out of school in his mid-teen to focus on music. He performed alongside his uncle Dick Bills in the ‘Sandia Mountain Boys’ band. At age 18, he formed his own group ‘the Western Wranglers’. Campbell moved to Los Angeles, California in the late 1950s to become a studio musician. He worked briefly with the rock and roll band the Champs. His next gig was as a songwriter at the American Music Company. He also performed with other session musicians as a member of ‘the Wrecking Crew’.

Campbell’s debut single “Turn Around, Look at Me” was released in 1961. It earned him a recording contract with Capitol Records. He’s since worked with musicians like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard and Nat King Cole. Campbell’s debut studio album, Big Bluegrass Special, was released in November 1962. It featured the Green River Boys. His first chart-topping country album, Gentle on My Mind, was released in August 1967. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It won two Grammy Awards including one for best country & western recording. Campbell followed up with the album, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, in November 1967. His 12th studio album, Wichita Lineman (1968), topped charts in the United States and Canada. The single “Wichita Lineman” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000. Campbell’s other albums include Galveston (1969), Rhinestone Cowboy (1975), Southern Nights (1977), and Ghost on the Canvas (2011). His 64th and final studio album, Adios, was released in June 2017 by Big Machine Records. Campbell has won 10 Grammy Awards and 10 Academy of Country Music Awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

In addition to music, Campbell was an actor and television show host. His first credited role was that of “Larry Dana” in the ABC series The F.B.I. (1967). He appeared in the film, True Grit (1969), alongside John Wayne and Kim Darby. Campbell hosted his own music/comedy variety show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969-72) on CBS. He starred as “Norwood Pratt” in the comedy-drama, Norwood (1970). The film was based on Charles Portis’ 1966 novel of the same name. Other film appearances include Any Which Way You Can (1980) with Clint Eastwood, Uphill All the Way (1986) with Roy Clark, and Rock-a-Doodle (1991). He was featured in the documentary films The Wrecking Crew (2008), and I’ll Be Me (2014).

Glen Campbell died on August 8, 2017, at the age of 81. His reported cause of death was Alzheimer’s disease. His diagnosis was announced in June 2011 and his last performance was in November 2012. Campbell was married 4 times and had eight children. His wives were Diane Kirk (1954-59), Bille Jean Nunley (1959-76), Sarah Barg (1976-80), and Kimberly Woollen (1982-2017). His children are Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane, Dillon, Cal, Shannon, and Ashley. He’s also survived by 10 grandchildren. Campbell was about 6ft tall and he was of English, Scottish, German and Irish ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $50 million prior to his death.
