Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan (d. 2009), was a cancer researcher/civil rights activist, and her father, Donald Harris, a professor at Stanford University. They’re of Tamil Indian and Jamaican descent respectively. The two separated when she was 7. Harris’ younger sister, Maya, is a political analyst for MSNBC. Her brother-in-law, Tony West, is a lawyer and general counsel at Uber.

CAREER
Growing up, Harris attended both a Hindu temple and a black Baptist church. At age 12, she moved to Montreal, Canada, with her mom. She attended Westmount High School in the suburb of Westmount. Harris completed her undergraduate studies at Howard University (1986). Her major was political science and economics. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Harris moved back to the United States for her graduate studies. She earned her J.D. from Hastings College of the Law (University of California) in 1989. She gained admittance to the State Bar of California in 1990.

Harris began her professional career in the early 1990s. She served as deputy district attorney in California’s Alameda County for 8 years (1990-98). She became managing attorney of San Francisco’s Career Criminal Unit in 1998. In 2000, Harris was recruited by City Attorney Louise Renne of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. One of her accomplishments was the ‘Back On Track initiative’ which gave nonviolent offenders a second chance (using job training and educational programs). In 2010, Harris narrowly defeated Republican Steve Cooley in the California General election. She became the 32nd Attorney General of California, an office she held from January 2011 to January 2017.

Harris would later succeed Barbara Boxer as a U.S. Senator for California (2017-). Her victory marked the first South Asian American and the 2nd African-American woman to hold said office. On January 21, 2019, Kamala Harris officially announced her candidacy for the 2020 presidential election. She sought the Democratic nomination. More than 20,000 people showed up to support her during her formal campaign launch event. Harris started out strong but her poll numbers would fall to single digits as the race progressed. On December 3, 2019, Harris withdrew her bid for the Democratic nomination, citing a lack of funds (“My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue.”). Harris was chosen by Democrat Joe Biden to be his running mate in the 2020 presidential election. Upon their victory, she was sworn in as the 49th vice president of the United States.
